Biography I started Scouting as a Cub Scout in the 1980s. I earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1996 as a member of Troop 160, in Bend, Oregon.

After serving 2 years as an LDS missionary in Budapest, Hungary, I joined the US Army and served for 6 years.  I spent a total of 22 months deployed to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division and 3rd Special Forces Group.

I am a father of a 3 year old future Eagle Scout and a graduate student at NC State University.

Why I am qualified to teach
Electronics
I am a practicing electrical engineer. I have worked in the field of electronics since 2001 in a variety of capacities ranging from technician to engineer. I have worked for local companies and even spent last summer in an internship with Qualcomm as an RF Engineer designing radio modules for cellular phones.
Prerequisites for this Activity Preparation will be key for success in this merit badge.

I will be instructing the course for the electronics merit badge at the annual LDS merit badge clinic held by the Occoneechee Council in November 2013.

If you plan to complete the requirements for this merit badge during the weekend clinic, please take the following steps:
  • Review all requirements listed in the electronics merit badge pamphlet  http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Electronics
  • Focus most of your preparation on requirements #4 and #6.
  • I will be bring supplies to do requirement #4(B) at the clinic. If you wish to choose (A) or (C), you will need to research and bring supplies for these circuits.
  • Finally, be prepared to discuss requirement #6. I will cover career opportunities in the field of electronics, but you will gain much more from our time if you come with relevant questions.
If you have any questions prior to the merit badge clinic, feel free to contact me at mattpurvis2001@hotmail.com.
