Event Description

Shelby District Outdoor Merit Badge Day 2021

Shelby District of the Greater Alabama Council is proud to offer this Outdoor Merit Badge Day so that scouts may further their advancement by earning some great merit badges and/or an award.

Date:  August 28, 2021

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Check-in starts at 8:30 AM)

Cost: $20.00 which includes lunch and a patch (to be mailed out later).  Parents and Leaders may preorder additional lunches for $8.00 by registering for lunch on the sign-up page.  No Shows will be charged for lunch. Lunch includes a Chick-Fil-A Boxed Lunch which includes a Chick-fil-a Sandwich, Chips, Cookie, Sauce, and Bottle Water.  Last day to register for the event is August 24, 2021.

Scouts should wear Class A uniforms.  Merit badge counselors expect scouts to be prepared for the classes they have registered to take.  Scouts should read the merit badge pamphlet prior to attending the class and have basic knowledge of what will be covered.  Each scout should bring to class...notebook, pen or pencil, any prerequisite work, you may want to bring a folding chair and their merit badge pamphlet along with any additional items listed for the class (see list below).  Merit badge counselors reserve the right to dismiss a scout from class if the scout is unprepared or for misbehavior.

Additional Items NEEDED:

Citizenship in the Nation * - Scouts will need to bring a water container for a short hike to Camp Tranquility for requirement 2A.

Cycling* (Mountain Bike Option) - Scouts will need to be able to mountain bike 5 miles.  Scout needs to bring a Mountain Bike, Helmet, and at least 2L of water that can be secured to the bike.

Environmental Science* - Scouts will need to bring gloves

Fishing - Scouts will need to bring their own rod and reel, along with any fishing gear they may want to use, and a water container.  (Scouts will be taking a short hike to the lake).

Hiking* - Scouts will need to be 14 years old and be able to maintain a pace of 5 miles for 2.5 hours.  Scouts will need to bring their Scout Essentials, Day Pack, at least 2L of Water, trekking poles (optional), and hiking shoes or boots.

Orienteering - Scouts will need to bring a compass  

Outdoor Ethics Awareness - Scouts will need to bring certificates for the prerequisites 3 "Leave No Trace" and 4 "Tread Lightly!".  https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/outdoor-ethics/awards/scouts-bsa/



Counselor Information

Counselors will be given an Excel Spreadsheet with participants' information in which they will mark the requirements completed.  This sheet will need to be turned in at the end of the event.   Troop Scoutmaster will receive a spreadsheet 7-10 days after the event showing what scouts accomplished during the event.

Unit Payment Instructions

Troops will need to collect payments from scouts prior to the event.  During check-in Troops can pay by cash, check payable to "Greater Alabama Council or GAC", or Credit / Debit Card.  The lunch fee is not refundable for No Shows.
