Adults must enter their BSA Number, DOB, First and Last name as it appears on their BSA ID card. We will query BSA and get back an answer. At this point one of three things can happen:
1) Your registration is verified - you can continue using Meritbadge.info normally
2) You are not registered or your registration has lapsed - your prior rights are revoked and you get the read-only screens that you see before your login
3) You are registered but your YPT has expired - your prior rights are revoked and you get the read-only screens that you see before your login

You have had at least two months to get yourself registered and complete YPT training. If you feel your validation is not working, send us an email with the four data items listed and we will validate your entry.

We have no control over what is on file at BSA. If everything matches your BSA ID card, there should be no issues. If not, your validation will fail.

Why are we doing this?
1. To provide higher security and validation of all adult users.
2. To clean up the mess we've accumulated via 15 years of poor user data entry.

What should you do? 
Login to https://my.scouting.org/ and copy your BSA ID Number then update your profile on Meritbadge.info.  Let others in your unit know they should do the same.  We are giving you 2.5 months advanced notice to make this work.

The Franklin County Amateur Radio Club (FCARC) in cooperation with the The American Legion Amater Radio Club (TALARC)  Post 187 and the Occoneechee Amateur Radio Society OARS) is holding a Radio Merit Badge class. 



There is no cost to attend this merit badge, bring with your a water bottle, your lunch, pen, paper, the completed merit badge workbook, and wear your ACTIVITY (class B) uniform.



This merit badge is limited to 15 Souts and will be conducted at the Summer Field Day 2019 for Amateur Radio operators around the world.



BE ADVISED.... Seats are Limited, sign up early.  Not limited to a District, Council, or State.  So ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND
Description
Radio Merit Badge



Registration begins at 8:30am and the class will start at 9am.



The scouts that participate will have the opportunity to complete all requirements during that period. 

There are several pre-requisites that need to be completed prior to the start of the course.


 

Scouts must Pre-read the MB Book, fill out the worksheet and be ready to ask questions!

 

Counselor Information

There will be several licensed Amateur Radio Operators attending and teaching that day . 

There are Merit Badge councilors, several of them actually, who are members of the TALARC 187 Radio Club at the American Legion Post, The Occoneechee Amateur Radio Society and the FCARC

 

There is no cost to participate. Scouts are urged to ‘be prepared’ and bring whatever they will need including food and water. 



    The class will start approximately 9:00AM - please try to be on-site between 8:30AM and 8:45AM.

  •     We request that 1 adult leader per troop be present.

  •     Members of the media may be present, and we request a Class 'B' Uniform be worn (TROOP RELATED IF POSSIBLE).

  •     By attending this class, you acknowledge that pictures may be taken by the press to use in  publications or posts.


This is not an easy, run of the mill, Merit Badge and does require a little preparedness.

Please download the Radio Merit Badge Workbook and fill this out prior to coming to the workshop. 

This will save a substantial amount of time so we can get to the fun part of the class.




This workbook will help you with your work, --BUT-- you still need to read the merit badge pamphlet (book) that you purchase from the Scout Shop

Things to Do Before Coming to the Merit Badge Class



Download and print the following documents and familiarize yourself with them prior to the course. 

BRING them with you to the course.

ACQUIRE, READ (prior to the event) and BRING the current Merit Badge pamphlet.



      a.    Please have any specific questions you want to address written down.

      b.    You do not have to build the crystal radio, but it's fun!



RADIO MERIT BADGE Pre-Reqs - Before attending the session, please do the following:

  1. Fill out the worksheets as complete as possible.  In order to save classroom time, draw/chart the following items in the worksheet.  That way you'll be less rushed during the course.  If you cannot get the chart done, don’t worry come anyway.  You may have to do some "post" class work before your blue card can be signed but we'll work with you to get that done


 

2a -Sketch a diagram showing how radio waves travel locally and around the world. Explain how the broadcast radio stations, WWV and WWVH can be used to help determine what you will hear when you listen to a shortwave radio?

 
Draw the chart of the Electromagnetic Spectrum (Requirement 3 a, b, c) before the class and bring it with you.  That way you'll be less rushed during the course.  If you can't get the chart done, don’t' worry come anyway.  You may have to do some "post" class work before your blue card can be signed but we'll work with you to get that done.



3a - Draw a chart of the electromagnetic spectrum covering 100 kilohertz (kHz) to 1000 megahertz (MHz).



3b - Label the MF, HF, VHF, UHF, and microwave portions of the spectrum on your diagram.



3c - Locate on your chart at least eight radio services such as AM and FM commercial broadcast, citizens band (CB), television, amateur radio (at least four amateur radio bands), and public service (police and fire).



5b - Draw a block diagram for a radio station that includes a transceiver, amplifier, microphone, antenna, and feed line.



5d - Draw eight schematic symbols. Explain what three of the represented parts do. Find three electrical components to match to three of these symbols

 

  1. A fully completed Merit Badge Application card for Radio Merit Badge signed by your Scoutmaster.   The card will be updated with tasks completed and returned signed at the end of the session. Include evidence of any requirements you may have completed in advance.

  2. Class B Uniform requested 

  3. A notebook or clipboard to write on and 2 pencils or pens. 

  4. Snacks (quiet type) and drinks.  Bring your lunch! 

  5. 1 Adult per troop requested 

  6. Report promptly, well rested, interested and ready to learn!


This is a PUBLIC EVENT and your family is invited to observe and get involved.

WHO KNOWS........We may just put them to work!!

Unit leaders:  

  • Please sign up for this merit badge as a unit, even if there is only one scout attending. (we understand)

  • This ensures at least one adult will be present with and for each unit minimum.

  • There is no cost to sign up or attend

  • bring a water bottle

  • bring snacks

  • bring your lunch

    • no open fires or coals, sorry.



  • There are tables and chairs in the room which can be used in the event the weather is uncooperative.
